What do Trinidad and Tropical Hammer of Carolina (THC) have in common? The answer is the same unusual musical instruments are skillfully crafted from 55 gal barrels in both places.
Wheeler Matthews, the master craftsman at THC received his initial training from Ellie Mannette in 1983. Wheeler's commitment to excellence in his craft has earned him a patent and such privileges as being featured on ETV, PBS, Kid Sizzle TV and Living in South Carolina Magazine. One of Wheeler's most treasured moments was seeing the drums he crafted for the Hiwassee Dam School steel drum band being used during their 2000 Grammy Award reception ceremony.
